Macy's, a retailer with a national and online presence, accepts returns for an unlimited time. Without proof of purchase, however, the company will refund the lowest retail price during the past 180 days.

A mid-price department store chain with an enormous assortment of merchandise, Macy's boasts a return policy that is quite generous for most items. The return window for a refund remains open for an unlimited time, but there is a small hidden cost in the absence of a receipt or invoice: You will receive store credit for the lowest retail price posted during the past 180 days. For gift returns, the Macy's return policy offers the option of putting credit onto a gift card or toward your own Macy's credit card.

The retailer holds tight to its standard return policies during the 2013 holiday season. One exception, however, is for dresses purchased online between Oct. 24 and Dec. 23. If the tags are still on, a dress can be mailed in for free within 60 days of receipt using a special return label found online.

Customers can return items at a physical store or by mail, although some items purchased online (e.g., rugs and lamps) must be returned by mail and store-bought items cannot be sent back. The Macy's return policy states that mail-in exchanges absolve you of the shipping fee for the new item although you are responsible for shipping charges associated with straight-out returns. Online orders are sent out with pre-paid shipping labels, but a $6.95 fee counts against the refund unless Macy's made an error. Macy's return policy further states that mailed packages should be insured.

For many soft-goods retailers, returns are a delicate issue. Most consumers have certainly heard of shoppers who buy an item of clothing for a one-time event, leave the tags on while carefully wearing it, and then return the article. Macy's tries to protect against this behavior with special return policies for certain merchandise. Bridesmaid dresses, for example, must be returned unworn within 30 days of purchase. Special rules also apply to mattresses, lighting, rugs, food products, sterling silver flatware, custom-sized jewelry, fine jewelry, and watches and are clearly spelled out on the company website.

Although this may seem complicated, Macy's return policy is one of the best.
